At Beeswax Bay Farm, we hear all sorts of things about beeswax candles - some wonderfully true, and others, well... let’s just say they’ve gone a bit off course. With so many myths floating around the waxy world of candles, we thought it was high time we set the record straight.

So grab your brew, pop your feet up, and let’s clear the air - literally and figuratively - with some friendly myth-busting.

Myth 1: "Beeswax candles are too expensive"

Truth: Beeswax candles do cost more upfront than your standard paraffin variety - but there’s a reason (or five) for that.

✔ They’re made from 100% natural beeswax, often harvested sustainably

✔ Hand-poured craftsmanship adds to their artisanal value

✔ They burn much slower, making them longer-lasting

✔ You’re supporting small businesses and ethical beekeeping

✔ They clean the air as they burn (more on that below!)In the long run, beeswax candles often work out more economical than cheaper options that burn out quicker.

Myth 2: "Beeswax candles smell weird or like honey"

Truth: This one depends on your nose, but most find beeswax candles have a light, naturally sweet scent - not overpowering, and definitely not “weird.”We like to describe it as “a warm, subtle hug from nature.”

We never add synthetic fragrance to our non-fragrance beeswax candles here at Beeswax Bay Farm. What you smell is exactly what the bees intended.

Myth 3: "All candles are basically the same"

Truth: Not even close!

Here’s a simple breakdown:

Paraffin candles are made from petroleum by-products

Soy candles are vegetable-based but can contain additives

Beeswax candles are 100% natural, toxin-free, and biodegradable

Plus, beeswax candles emit negative ions when burned, which help purify the air by binding to dust, pollen and other nasties. No other candle wax can claim that.

Myth 4: "Beeswax candles are only for winter"

Truth: While they’re perfect for creating a cosy winter glow, beeswax candles are actually ideal all year round.

Spring dinner party? Summer garden table? Autumn bath soak? There’s always room for a natural flicker of light. We even have seasonal designs and scents to suit every time of year - take a peek here.

Myth 5: "They smoke and drip just like other candles"

🕯️ Truth: High-quality beeswax candles - like the ones we lovingly hand-pour in Warwickshire - burn cleanly and with minimal smoke or drip, provided the wick is trimmed and the candle is placed away from drafts.

Beeswax has a high melting point, which means a longer, more stable burn. Less mess. More glow.

Myth 6: "Bees are harmed in the process"

Truth: Absolutely not! Ethical beekeeping is key to everything we do.

We only use wax sourced from happy hives in Devon, where bees are cared for with respect. The wax we use is a by-product of the honey harvest - it’s not taken from the bees’ stores for survival.

In fact, by supporting beeswax products, you’re directly supporting sustainable beekeeping and healthy bee populations.

Myth 7: "Beeswax candles don’t come in different colours"

Truth: While natural beeswax has that beautiful golden glow, it can be filtered or blended to create white beeswax, and coloured naturally using mineral or plant-based pigments

At Beeswax Bay Farm, we mostly keep things natural - but occasionally have limited edition decorative ranges in beautiful, earthy tones. All without synthetic dyes.

Final Thoughts

Beeswax candles aren’t just beautiful - they’re better for your health, your home, and the planet. So next time someone repeats one of these old myths, feel free to set them right (gently, of course).
