At Beeswax Bay Farm, every candle tells a story. It’s not mass-produced, machine-pressed, or rushed out of a factory. It’s hand-poured, with care, patience, and a good bit of love. In this blog, we’re inviting you behind the scenes to see how we transform raw, natural beeswax into the beautiful candles that glow in your homes.

Whether you're a fellow craft lover or simply curious about what makes hand-poured candles so special, grab a cuppa and settle in. Let’s wax lyrical about wax… (we couldn’t help ourselves).

Step One: Sourcing the Beeswax

We only use 100% pure beeswax, sustainably sourced from trusted beekeepers in Devon. This wax is a golden gift from nature, rich in natural scent and free from toxins. We don’t bleach, dye, or alter its character. The warm honey aroma? That’s nature's perfume. Why Devon? The bees there are looked after with exceptional care, and the quality of the wax is second to none. It’s a beautiful, ethical partnership.

Step Two: Preparing the Workspace

Cleanliness is key. Before we even light the hob, we make sure our workspace is spotless, organised, and ready for pouring.✔ All equipment is sterilised

✔ Wicks are prepped and straightened

✔ Moulds are lightly warmed to avoid air bubblesEverything is arranged so we can work in a calm, unhurried rhythm - candlemaking is as much about mindset as it is about method.

Step Three: Melting the Wax

The beeswax is gently melted over a low heat. This process takes time (no microwaves here, thank you very much). Beeswax has a high melting point, and rushing it can burn the wax and dull its natural fragrance.

We stir slowly and often, keeping the temperature just right. It’s a bit like making a proper custard—slow, steady, and oh so satisfying.

Step Four: Adding the Wick and Pouring

Once the wax is perfectly melted, it’s time to pour. But first, we secure our cotton wicks - centred and tensioned just so.Then, the wax is poured in smooth, even streams. No splashing, no fuss. Each candle is poured by hand, giving us total control over quality and consistency.

It’s at this point we might infuse a batch with essential oils (for our scented range) or pour into unique moulds for our decorative styles like bees, hearts, and florals.

Step Five: Curing and Finishing

Once poured, the candles need to rest and cure. This allows the wax to set fully, and the scent (if added) to settle beautifully.

After curing, we:

✔ Trim the wicks

✔ Polish the candles

✔ Check for any imperfections

Only the best make it into your box. The rest? We melt them back down and try again. Nothing goes to waste.

Final Touches: Wrapping with Care

Every candle is lovingly wrapped in eco-conscious packaging. Kraft paper, natural twine, and biodegradable fillers - because what’s the point of a natural candle wrapped in plastic?

Each parcel includes:

✔ A product care card

✔ A thank you note

✔ A touch of rustic charm

Why Choose Hand-Poured?

There’s something deeply personal about a hand-poured candle. It’s not just wax and wick. It’s intention, skill, and warmth in every flicker.

Hand-poured candles offer:

✔ Cleaner burn with fewer impurities

✔ Longer-lasting fragrance

✔ Unique, artisan charm

✔ Sustainable, mindful production

When you light one of our candles, you’re not just creating ambience. You’re supporting ethical craftsmanship and a slower, more thoughtful way of living.
