Button Quail / Chinese Painted Quail Facts

Chinese Painted Quail Facts

  • Species: Coturnix chinensis
  • Common names: Chinese Painted Quail, Button Quail, King Quail and Blue-breasted Quail
  • Adult weight: Approximately 40–50 g
  • Egg weight: Approximately 3–5 g
  • Incubation: Usually around 16–18 days, although hatching can take longer when incubation conditions are not ideal. Quail are generally listed at around 16 days for incubation.
  • Chick size: Tiny at hatching — only a few grams and remarkably small compared with Coturnix quail
  • Lifespan: Typically around 2–4 years, with individual birds potentially living longer with good care
  • Colours: Available in a fascinating variety of natural colours and captive-bred colour varieties
  • Size: Much smaller than Coturnix quail, making them particularly popular for suitable planted or natural-style aviaries

Perfect for Suitable Aviaries

Button Quail are tiny, active ground-dwelling birds that spend much of their time foraging on the floor of an aviary. They can add plenty of movement and character without taking up the space required by larger quail.

They are best kept in a secure, appropriately designed aviary or enclosure with shelter, hiding places and protection from predators and harsh weather. In colder conditions, additional protection or supplementary heat may be necessary.

⚠️ Important Notes:

  • While fertility is high at the farm, we cannot guarantee hatch rates due to postal handling and incubation variables beyond our control.
  • A hatch rate of 50-70% is considered good for postal hatching eggs - we recommend ordering slightly more than you need to allow for natural variation.
  • Please ensure you have an incubator ready or broody hen before ordering.
  • Unfortunately, we’re not able to offer refunds on hatching eggs. This is simply because so many factors are outside our control once the eggs leave us - including postal handling, the incubation set-up being used, and the buyer’s experience with maintaining the correct temperature and humidity.

If you ever have any questions or feel unsure about any part of the hatching process, please don't hesitate to get in touch - I'm always happy to help. Natalie
